The Mi A1 from Xiaomi truly blew us away when we reviewed the smartphone last year. It paved the way for manufacturers to come out with their own budget offering that offered tremendous bank-for-your-buck options. What really stood out was its Android One deal which offered a stock Android experience with the promise of relatively faster software updates than its MIUI-based cousins. Xiaomi is following up on this promise with the Mi A2 which the company has now confirmed will be coming soon.
Xiaomi Mi A2: Expected To Launch on July 24
Xioami sent out a tweet today with the hashtag “#2isbetterthan1”. The accompanying image promises that “The next gen is coming”. The phone was recently spotted on an EEC listing which gave a clear indication that the launch of this phone was imminent. The Mi A2 and a Mi A2 Lite were recently popped up on a Polish retail site which cemented this notion further.
The next launch event scheduled by the company is going to take place in Spain on 24th July. This would be Xiaomi’s first ever launch event taking place in Europe. Not only will Xiaomi be releasing this phone to a larger audience, but the fact that it is going to offer a stock Android experience ensures much better reception from potential customers.
Mi A2: Specifications, Features
As for imaging, the phone is likely to offer a 12MP + 20MP AI dual-camera setup on the back and a 20MP AI front-facing camera with AI Face Unlock support. Connectivity features listed on the Polish retailer website include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, 4G LTE, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS, and a USB Type-C port. There should also be an included IR blaster which would just add a further level of convenience. Fueling the device is likely to be a 3000mAh capacity battery. The Mi A2 is also going to feature support for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
The fact that this phone is an Android Go smartphone means it would arrive with the latest Android 8,0 Oreo installed by default. This will offer a bloatware-free stock Android UI without any unnecessary additions on top. This also helps reduce the load on the RAM and CPU, and saves up on storage. With the decreased load, the phone also ensures improvements in battery life. Last but not least, this move ensures that phone will get Android security and OS updates as soon as Google releases them.
Mi A2: Expected Launch, Price in India
The event taking place in Spain is likely to be a global announcement of the device which will lead to release dates for India being announced soon after. We could expect the phone to make its way to the country as soon as the end of this month or by the beginning of August. Pricing can be expected to be slightly higher than the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It is currently speculated that the Mi A2 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant could be priced at Rs.16,999 or slightly lower. A 6GB RAM model might also be announced which could be priced closer to the Rs.20,000 price point.
