Rumours point to the possibility of the LG G7 coming with a dedicated AI button and an f/1.5 camera aperture, two feature straight out of Samsung’s playbook

LG G7 could sport dedicated AI button, f/1.5 aperture

LG’s G-series has been quiet the talk of the town lately. It began with LG Electronics Vice Chairman, Cho Sung-Jin, announcing that the company will no longer follow the yearly upgrade plan for its smartphones. Then, there was news that the successor to the G6 was being scrapped and would not be announced at MWC earlier this year, and would be replaced instead by a new variant of the LG V30 at the show floor. However, as months have passed, the LG G7 is becoming more and more of a reality and small details about this smartphone are starting to become clearer. This time around, there are reports that the LG G7 will have a dedicated AI button and the camera will have a large f/1.5 aperture.

We have known that LG would be focusing on infusing their smartphone with their ThinQ AI platform, something we saw in gratuitous amounts at the LG booth at MWC. The AI platform is integrated into the camera system to help identify objects and even aid in shopping (through the right e-commerce integration), but that’s not all that it is capable of. LG will be taking a very Samsung-like approach with their AI, and thus, a dedicated button doesn’t seem far-fetched but isn’t necessarily something that will go down well with consumers. People today continue to look for ways to remap the dedicated Bixby button on their Samsung flagships, so one can hope that LG will allow users to remap the button freely.

The next piece of information revolves around the camera. LG is expected to use a f/1.5 aperture on the primary camera, similar to what the Samsung S9 duo have. However, we don’t expect LG to follow the dual aperture route. We don’t expect LG to move away from their Wide-Ultra-Wide camera setup since it is something that sets this camera unit apart from everything else in the market.

As far as other details are concerned, we don’t know anything for certain but do expect the LG G7 to ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 SoC. Various reports have suggested a base 6GB of RAM, which makes sense as the newest version of the LG V30, the LG V30s, has 6GB RAM. As far as storage goes, we can expect both 64GB and 128GB variants at lauch. There are also reports that LG will ditch the OLED panel in favour of an MLCD+ display, a type of display that is said to reduce power consumption by up to 35 percent in comparison to a regular LCD display. We do believe that LG G7 will have a Quad-DAC, another feature that has set LGs phones apart from everything else in the market.
